Maria in Flashback: 2002 Indian Wells


In 2002, Ten years ago The girl has made debut in Tennis World at the age of 14 at the Tier 1 at Indian Wells. She is no other than our Own Masha, awarded a wild card and won her first round match. Maris said after win "Playing in such a big stadium is such big thing for me. i did not get down after 1st set and felt very confident."
In the next round, Maria faced 9-time Grand Slam champion and No.4 seed Monica Seles of the United States and went out by the score of 0-6 2-6. After going to deuce four times before holding serve in the opening game of the match, Seles breezed through the first set in 24 minutes and lost only seven points in the final five games.
In the 2nd set, she had control with a service break that put her up 4-2, then closed out the 59-minute match with her fifth break.
Maria said after the match: "The match today was just unbelievable for me. I felt really good about it and I thought I did really well. It's something I'll always remember. It really teaches you a lot of things, playing against the pros. I played against an unbelievable pro and I think I handled it pretty well. I had no fear. I just went out and played the best I could.''
Monika said that Maria is "just great" for her age and has the potential to have a successful career.





Maria at the age of 14 reached her first Grand Slam final at junior level at the Australian Open in Melbourne. This was Maria's second Grand Slam appearance. On the way to the final, Maria defeated current US Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia.


After two years later Maria won her first Grand Slam at the age of 17 at Wimbledon to beat Sarena Williams.
