Maria booked a spot in the quarters of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, Italy after she defeated No.13 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 7-6 6-3 in 1 hour and 47 minutes. In the first set, Ana began by taking a 3-0 lead over Maria, but Maria recovered somewhat and brought the score back to 3-2. But the players held their serves until Sharapova served at 3-5, the Serbian squandered a set point before the Russian held her serve. In the following game, Ana had the opportunity to serve for the first set, but she could not convert five set points in that game.
Maria came out firing as she took the next five games to take the set 6-3. Maria won matchpoint when Ivanovic hit a backhand into the net.
